Frustration, TX

We left for Texas on Thursday night. We had a layover in Phoenix, so my parents came to see us and we all had dinner together. I don't know if it was so fun because we were in an airport or because we don't get to see each other as much as we want- but we had a blast! Our connecting flight to Houston was delayed a little so we hit up Starbucks for some Word of Wisdom friendly steamed milk. Once we finally got on the plane, the weather had worsened and we flew the majority of the way in a horrible lightening storm. Tyler is sure we were hit at least once! Arriving in Houston was like entering a very small gym that contained only a pool, a heater and a large man exercising until his face was blue. Very muggy. We called the hotel for the shuttle service and after attempting to understand the broken English through the thick accent we made our way to the waiting area. Then, when we realized we had not made our way to the shuttle area, we promptly redirected ourselves to the correct area where a stern Indian man was waiting for us. We thanked him (he gave no reply), asked him questions about the area (still no reply), noticed that there was no rearview mirror (we thought it better not to comment on this one) and at last arrived to the hotel comfortable in our awkward silence. He exited the shuttle, entered the front desk, and proceeded to check us in.
Tyler was a little paranoid about getting to his interview on time, so he set the alarm clock and my phone alarm for 6:30am, even though his interview wasn't until 10:00am. We got to sleep around 2:00am, paying no attention to the thunder storm. I woke up in the morning to the frantic sounds of Tyler's surprise, "Are you kidding me?" "Oh, come on!"
"What?" I asked, groggy and feeling like I knew what a hangover was. Then I saw the clock- 9:00a.m. I knew we were at least an hour away and we hadn't picked up our rental car yet. I didn't have to ask what he was so upset about after that. How could this happen? We raced to ready ourselves and Tyler called the school to let them know that he was going to be late.
There was a very nice lady at Dollar Rent-a-Car who gave us "better directions" then the ones we had printed out online. We got into our rented Dodge sedan and left the parking lot, or tried to-at least. Apparently we had occupied the wrong car. No matter- the problem was solved and we were on our way.
Now, I don't know how long this lady has lived in Texas for, but it seems she is mistaken on the fastest routes. We hit a massive construction zone that slowed our already creeping pace. Around 11:25am we arrived at the school- no, never mind- that was the wrong one. Ahh, here it is, second time's a charm! I slept in the car as Tyler interviewed with Katy school district. He came out looking pleased. He said it went well but they didn't have their numbers in yet so they weren't sure if they were going to be in need of a French teacher. Feeling pretty impressed that the morning wasn't a disaster we went looking for the second (the sure deal) interview. This is the one we came down here for, the big enchilada. As Tyler interviewed I roamed around the school and watched the kids while making a mental list of reasons I'm glad not in high school anymore. He finally emerged at last speaking the words I was waiting for, "I will NEVER work here!"
"What?" I asked, sure he was joking. "They don't even have a position open. And if they did want a part-time (the dreaded words) French teacher I would have to float- I wouldn't even get my own classroom!" I stood there dumbfounded. We came all the way down here for them? Thoughts ran through my mind of practical methods of revenge, mostly having to do with spray paint, keys and a large 2 x 4.
We spent the rest of the day looking around the area and treating ourselves to some really excellent Mexican food complete with Mariachi band and all.
The truly unfortunate thing is that on Saturday we went house hunting and found some beautiful, affordable miraculous homes. We fell in love with the area. It is so gorgeous down there! I know around June we'd be hating life outside- but that's what air-conditioning and NetFlix are for!
When we got home on Sunday we found out that another school had called (quite the timing, wouldn't you say?) and wanted to set up an interview with Tyler right away. Typical.
